Paving the Way: Black Sports Heroes of Sioux City Central High School

Central High School’s first Black athlete was Leland Washington; in 1904, he played left tackle for what was then Sioux City High School (later Central) and was honored as a member of the All-Iowa football team. Learn about Washington and other standout young black athletes with a short film by Jim Tillman, followed by a panel and discussion emceed by Ike Rayford.

Community members are welcome to join in the discussion with their stories about Black Sioux City athletes who paved the way for later generations. The program is co-sponsored by the NAACP of Sioux City as part of Black History Month.
