Preschool Programs


 

Duration: Preschool classes run 45 minutes to one hour
Cost: $1 per student to cover materials
Capacity: Twelve (12) students minimum

  • Dinosaur Dig!

    This program is designed to introduce students to the world of dinosaurs. The program begins with a short video introducing dinosaurs and explaining how they end up in museums as fossils.

    The program continues with a dinosaur craft and ends with a visit to "The Big Dig" - a replica of an actual dig site. The Dig features both land and sea creatures and promotes an opportunity for kids of all ages to explore the field of palaeontology.

  • The Farm

    Come and find farm artefacts at the Museum. This program begins with a story about Otis the Tractor and life on the farm. A story related farm craft will be completed by the students.

    The program continues with a short scavenger hunt in the Museum gallery to look for farm artifacts. Time permitting a game may be played.

Elementary School Programs


 

Duration: Programs run approximately one hour

*Content is designed to meet curriculum standards outlined by Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota in the grades listed.

  • And Away We Go!

    K – 1st grades

    This program focuses on transportation. Students will explore the history of travel in Sioux City through photos and artifacts. A gallery tour or scavenger hunt will focus on types of travel used in Sioux City’s’ past.

  • Pioneer Life

    K - 2nd grades

    This program is designed to help students learn about our early settlers and their way of life. The program consists of several parts: artifact display and discussion of early life, tour of the log cabin and early settler exhibit, and games from long ago.

  • Timelines

    2nd - 3rd grades

    Using local history artifacts, students will develop a sequence of events on a timeline to gain knowledge of Americas past and understand how people and groups are alike and different. Museum tour will focus on identifying significant artifacts and gaining understanding of chronological concepts.

  • The Best of Sioux City

    4th - 5th grades

    An overview of the current Museum exhibitions is a natural fit for any student studying Sioux City or Iowa history.

    Highlights such as our orientation film, Time Machine, and disaster wall are an exciting way to explore historical resources.

Middle – High School Programs


 

We will collaborate with teachers to offer focused tours on a subject that fits with their curriculum. Economics, industrial revolution, archaeology or culture/ethnicity are a few subjects that work well, but we are open to your ideas!

Bring history into the classroom with a Live Virtual Tour around the museum.

 

The tours are:

  • Accessible via Teams or Zoom

  • 30-35 minutes with a guide visiting Museum Exhibits

  • Focused on Corn Palaces, First People, Early Settlers, Transportation, Technology Changes, or a specific topic based on the interest of your class

We encourage multiple classes to sign up for a time slot together.
