Victorian style architecture was the dominant form of design in the United States in the last half of the 19th century. The elaborate form, often composed of towers, bay windows, steeply pitched roofs, and ornate porches, was made possible by new construction methods and materials made available through the industrial revolution. The rise in the popularity of the style, combined with Sioux City’s high growth rate in the 1880s and 1890s, resulted in the construction of thousands of Victorian style houses in the city. Tom Munson, Archives Manager, focuses this photographic presentation on Victorian residential design, which can be found in almost every Sioux City neighborhood.
