History at High Noon: Philip C. Waltermire Photography

  • Sioux City Public Museum 607 4th Street Sioux City, IA, 51101 United States (map)

Tom Munson, Archives Manager, showcases the work of the early Sioux City photographer who captured many unique images from the era.

Philip C. Waltermire opened a photography studio in Sioux City in 1891. Though his work was mostly in portraiture, Waltermire was also able to capture images of major Sioux City events, like the Corn Palace festivals, 1892 Floyd River Flood, fires, military encampments, and parades. In the summers Waltermire’s studio moved to Riverside Park where he documented recreation at the park, boat clubs, on the Big Sioux River, and Interstate Fair events.
