Society of Animal Artists: Art and the Animal

  • Sioux City Public Museum 607 4th Street Sioux City, IA 51101 United States (map)

The Society of Animal Artists is pleased to announce its 64th Annual Exhibition, featuring the work of 118 members, held at the Sioux City Public Museum. The exhibition will showcase a wide variety of worldwide species by the Society’s international membership. The artwork ranges in style, media, size, and technique, and will be displayed August 31 through November 30th, 2024.

The Society of Animal Artists traces its origins back to the 1950s when a group of New York metro artists began meeting at the Bronx Zoo to paint the animals there.  In 1958 they staged an exhibition of their artwork at New York’s Burr Galleries called Animals in Bronx Zoo.  The enthusiastic public response led directly to the formation of the Society of Animal Artists (SAA) two years later.  The SAA’s original 22 members opened their first annual exhibition, Art and the Animal, at Burr Galleries in May 1960.  Subsequent editions of the exhibit were held at various galleries around New York City until 1981, when it became a traveling show.  Art and the Animal has been hosted by dozens of galleries and museums across the United States and Canada over the past 43 years.

SAA members are dedicated to maintaining high standards in fine art while promoting conservation of the natural world through exhibits and educational programs.  Today’s SAA is comprised of more than 500 domestic and international members.  These artists seek to support the conservation movement via the ecological message of their artwork and through direct financial contributions to conservation causes using funds generated by the sale of the work they create.
