Hometown History: Hamilton Blvd...well who is Hamilton?

(KTIV) - Busy Hamilton Boulevard. It was where many of Sioux City’s firsts took place.     

The first McDonalds.     

The first Taco John’s.     

The first Applebees, and other past eateries like Sambos and The Red Onion.     

In the 1850s, a part of what is now Hamilton Blvd, then known as North Sioux City, was platted and divided into lots.     

But after moving to Sioux City in 1868, James H. Hamilton and some partners bought the subdivision, and what was then Hannibal Street eventually became Hamilton. The north end of Hamilton was farmland in 1905 near Outer Drive. It went from being a cow path to a dirt road with houses along it.

These days business galore line Hamilton Boulevard. But all of this area, including the hill where doctor’s offices are now located, was once the Sunset View Golf Course, which in the early 1960s became the site of Sioux City’s first urban mall the Sunset Plaza Shopping Center.
